Westwood Girls Remain Perfect, Boys Sweep Archrival Ishpeming

The Westwood boys basketball team used a balanced scoring effort to snap their two-game losing streak, downing Ishpeming 49-41 on Friday.

Westwood went on a 12-0 run midway through the first half while holding Ishpeming without a field goal for over nine minutes. The Hematites were shutout for most of the second quarter until sinking a free throw at the 3:08 mark. The Pats led by as many as 14 points in the first half but Ishpeming managed to get within ten at halftime.

Westwood struggled offensively late in the third quarter, netting just one field goal in the final four minutes of the frame and Ishpeming got within four points. But 11 of Westwood’s 17 fourth quarter points came at the free throw line to help the Patriots earn the regular season sweep.

Taylor Dellangelo led the way with 15 points while Ty Alderton added nine off the bench. Nathan Beckman and Blake Hewitt each scored eight points as the team finished 14/19 at the free throw line.

Westwood won the junior varsity contest 50-16 and the freshman game 45-30 as well. The Patriots are now 7-3 and visit Escanaba on Tuesday.

The Patriot girls basketball team cruised to a 54-39 victory over Houghton on Friday.

Westwood raced out to a 33-13 advantage at halftime and led by 25 points after three quarters. Tessa Leece turned in a game-high 22 points on 10/15 shooting while Madelyn Koski finished with 11 points and six rebounds.

Westwood is now 10-0 and visits Iron Mountain on Monday.
