The Westwood girls basketball won their sixth consecutive game and clinched a share of the Mid Peninsula Conference championship on Friday, downing rival Negaunee 53-40 at Westwood High School.
Negaunee led 10-6 after one quarter but Westwood took their first lead with 7:07 to play in the first half when Madelyn Koski buried a three-pointer and the Pats remained on top from then on. Westwood scored the first eight points of the second quarter and outscored the Miners 18-8 in the stanza for a 24-18 halftime lead. Negaunee got within 40-35 after three quarters but that’s as close as they would get in the second half as Westwood opened the fourth frame with an 11-0 run to pull away.
Tessa Leece led the Westwood attack with 19 points. Natalie Prophet followed with 11 while Karlie Patron and Koski each added nine. Westwood is now 17-1 and can clinch the Mid Peninsula Conference championship with a victory at Gwinn next Thursday.
