Westwood Girls Top Gladstone, Boys Suffer First Loss

The Westwood girls basketball team topped visiting Gladstone 56-48 in Mid Peninsula Conference action Monday night at Westwood High School.

Gladstone led by as many as eight points early on but Westwood outscored the Braves 16-5 in the second quarter to take a 24-21 halftime lead. An 18-0 run gave Westwood their largest lead at 39-21 but the Braves rattled off nine consecutive points to get within single digits. The Patriots built a 15-point lead in the fourth quarter and Gladstone never got closer than within eight down the stretch.

Tessa Leece led Westwood with 15 points while Madelyn Koski and Natalie Prophet each added ten. The Patriots are now 5-1 and host Calumet on Thursday.

The Westwood boys suffered their first loss of the year, falling at West Iron County 50-42 on Monday.

The Wykons led 26-21 at halftime and led by as many as 12 points in the second half before the Patriots cut the lead to single digits in the fourth quarter. Zach Carlson led the Patriots with 18 points as Westwood falls to 3-1 and will visit Gwinn on Wednesday.
