The Westwood boys basketball team avenged an earlier setback Monday night, topping West Iron County 47-41 in West-PAC action.
The Patriots never trailed, jumping out to a 13-8 lead after one quarter before extending it to 27-16 at halftime. The Wykons opened the second half on a 7-0 run to get within four but Zach Carlson gave the Pats some breathing room with an old-fashioned three point play.
Westwood rebuilt a double-digit lead at 34-24 but West Iron went on a 10-2 run to get within two midway through the fourth quarter. The Patriots scored the next four points but a successful And-1 opportunity brought the Wykons within 40-37 with three minutes to play. On the next possession, Zach Beckman received a low-post pass, converted a layup while being fouled and made the ensuing free throw. Westwood led by multiple possessions from that point on.
Carlson finished with 14 points while Taylor Dellangelo added 12 to lead the Patriots who move to 7-3 overall. Westwood hits the road Thursday to visit Iron Mountain.
