A decisive third quarter doomed the Westwood Patriot boys basketball team Tuesday night, falling to Marquette 61-47 in non-conference action.
Westwood led 15-11 after one quarter but the Redmen scored the first nine points of the second frame to go up by five. That’s when the Patriot offense erupted to go a 12-0 run in the final 3:56 of the first half, taking a 27-20 lead into the break.
The Patriots scored the opening bucket of the third quarter but the Redmen answered with a 15-0 run to take the lead for good. Westwood trailed 40-34 after three quarters but could get no closer than within five down the stretch.
Zach Carlson led all scorers with a game-high 23 points as Westwood drops to 7-5 overall. The Patriots now turn their attention to a home date with Manistique on Friday.
