A strong finish to the first half helped the Westwood girls basketball team extend their winning streak to twelve consecutive games as the Patriots topped Iron Mountain 73-44 on Tuesday.
The Patriots led 8-4 before Iron Mountain responded with a 5-0 run to take their first lead. Westwood rallied to go up 16-10 but a Mountaineer three-pointer in the final minute of the opening quarter ignited a 10-3 run.
That’s when the Patriots’ pressure defense took control as Westwood ended the first half on a 16-1 run and led 35-21 at the break. The Patriots scored the first seven points of the third quarter as well and the lead never dipped below 20 after that.
Tessa Leece turned in a game-high 19 points while Karlie Patron added 17 and Madelyn Koski 14 as all eight active Patriots scored in the contest. Westwood is now 14-1 and will visit Manistique on Friday.
