The Westwood basketball teams hit the road and swept a doubleheader from Manistique on Friday.
The Patriot boys trailed for most of the night but used a 21-point fourth quarter to top Manistique 66-65 in a Mid Peninsula thriller.
Westwood led 6-4 before Manistique ripped off the next nine points and led 17-8 after a quarter. The Emeralds led by as many as ten before halftime but Westwood managed to get within 33-30 at the break.
The Patriots used a 9-0 run of their own to go ahead 42-39 in the third quarter but Manistique fought back to claim a 48-45 lead after three. The Emeralds built their largest lead of the second half at 54-47 with 6:24 remaining. That’s when the Patriots called timeout and scored the next six points to get within one before tying the game at 55 minutes later.
Westwood retook the lead at 62-60 with less than two minutes to play and wouldn’t give it up. Zach Carlson sank two free throws with six seconds left to put Westwood up by four and a Manistique half-court heave at the buzzer was too little too late.
Carlson led all scorers, pouring in a career-high 33 points while Marcus Boase added ten to pace Westwood. The Patriots are now 9-6 and will host Gwinn on Tuesday.
The Lady Patriots never trailed, routing Manistique 66-35 for their 13th consecutive victory.
Westwood led 13-8 after one quarter, 33-23 at halftime and 49-28 after three. Tessa Leece turned in a game-high 22 points to go along with seven rebounds. Madelyn Koski finished with 18 points and eight assists while Karlie Patron added 12 points and also had eight assists. The Patriots are now 15-1 and visit Gwinn on Monday.
