District Champs; Patriots Move On To Regionals

Westwood has captured the District 66 girls basketball championship for a second consecutive year after topping Negaunee 48-44 on Friday.

Westwood never trailed, racing out to a 13-4 lead after one quarter. The Patriots went up by as many as 11 points in the first half but Negaunee ripped off an 8-0 run to get within three. Westwood built a lead as large as 36-27 in the third quarter before the Miners answered with another 8-0 run to get within one.

Negaunee had the ball twice in the final minute of regulation trailing 44-42 but turned the ball over both times. From there, Tessa Leece and Natalie Prophet combined to knock down four free throws and Prophet sealed the victory with an offensive rebound in the final seconds.

Karlie Patron poured in a game-high 19 points while Madelyn Koski finished with 15 to pace Westwood. The Patriots are now 21-2 and will play Calumet in a regional semifinal Tuesday night in Marquette. Calumet topped Hancock 52-47 in double overtime to claim the District 65 title. Westwood defeated Calumet 59-45 on January 9th.
