Mick McCabe, longtime high school sports reporter for the Detroit Free Press, wrote a great profile about the Chassell girls basketball team and their improbable run to the state finals at Calvin College.
The team representing the school of 83 students was dubbed “the little engine that almost did” and I couldn’t think of a more appropriate moniker.
After losing in the state finals to Adrian Lenawee Christian 57-36, the Panthers finished the season 26-2 and hadn’t lost since the very first game of the season against L’Anse on November 28. McCabe pointed out in the story that six of the seven senior girls in the entire school played on the basketball team. Everyone knows everyone, and that’s not an exaggeration according to the players.
The Panthers were led by the talented guard Milly Allen and Sydney Danison, two seniors who will be remembered as part of the most successful class in Chassell history.
The Cinderella story may have ended in Grand Rapids, but the memories those players and fans made will last a lifetime.
