The Westwood Patriots overcame a slow start and raced past archrival Ishpeming 55-37 on Friday.
Ishpeming jumped out to a 10-0 lead and held Westwood scoreless until the 2:05 mark of the opening quarter. But the Patriots responded by scoring the next nine points before taking the lead for the first time with 5:42 to play in the second quarter. Westwood led 23-19 at halftime and led by as many as 22 points in the game.
Tessa Leece poured in 25 points on 10/15 shooting from the field while Madelyn Koski added 13 points and dished out five assists. The victory was Westwood’s first over the Hematites on the road since January 29, 2009. Westwood is now 13-1 and hosts Marquette next Thursday.
