The Westwood boys basketball team set a new season-high in points scored on Wednesday, downing the Gwinn Modeltowners 71-48 in Gwinn.
The Patriots never trailed, jumping out to a 10-5 lead. Gwinn responded with a 7-2 run to tie the game early in the second quarter but then Westwood rattled off 12 unanswered points and led by double-digits the rest of the way.
Leading 37-16 at halftime, the Pats went up by as many as 22 points early in the second half. Gwinn managed to get the deficit down to 45-30 after three quarters and were within 11 early in the fourth before Westwood scored 17 of the contest’s final 22 points.
Taylor Dellangelo led the way with 19 points, Nathan Beckman had 17 and Ty Alderton added 13 as seven different Patriots got in the scorebook. Westwood improves to 11-6 overall and visits Calumet on Thursday.
The Patriot girls earned a signature non-conference win on Wednesday, topping Marquette 45-37 at Westwood High School.
The Patriots led 10-8 after one quarter, 28-17 at halftime and 40-24 after three. Marquette got within single digits twice in the final three minutes but could get no closer than seven down the stretch. Marquette (13-3) entered the night averaging 55 points per game.
The Redettes, who’ve already locked up the Great Northern Conference championship, saw their 12-game winning streak come to a close. Madelyn Koski led all scorers with 15 points while Tessa Leece finished with 12 and Karlie Patron added ten. Westwood improves to 16-1 and hosts Negaunee on Friday.
