The Westwood boys basketball team took Gladstone to overtime before ultimately falling 57-53 on Monday.
The Patriots led by as many as eight points in the first quarter but Gladstone scored the final four points of the frame to get within 16-12 after one. The Braves tied the game on multiple occasions in the second quarter but Westwood went into the halftime break with a 28-23 lead.
The Patriots maintained a slim lead through the third quarter and led 43-39 heading to the fourth. The lead changed hands several times in the final minutes of regulation. Tied at 53-all, Westwood turned the ball over with 38 seconds to play. Gladstone played for the final shot but a three-point try at the buzzer fell short.
Gladstone’s Reece Castor scored a layup to give his team the lead with two minutes left in the overtime session. Trailing by two, Westwood called a timeout with 16 seconds left but turned the ball over. Castor picked up the lose ball and scored a layup with five seconds left to seal the victory.
Ty Alderton led Westwood with 14 points. Blake Hewitt finished with 11 and Jacob Adriano had ten. Castor, a Northern Michigan commit, turned in a game-high 18 points as Gladstone improves to 11-7 overall. Westwood falls to 11-8 and will close the regular season Wednesday at Negaunee.
