The Westwood Patriots suffered their first loss on the football field this season, dropping a West PAC contest at Iron Mountain 42-22 on Friday.
The two teams played to a scoreless draw in the first quarter but Iron Mountain quarterback Colin Visintainer exploded for a 25-yard touchdown run with 8:45 to play in the second frame. The Mountaineers doubled their lead with 5:02 left in the half when Dante Basanese plunged into the endzone from five yards out. Iron Mountain knocked on the door again just before halftime but the Westwood defense came up with a stop on 4th-and-1 from the 11-yard line and the Mountaineers went into the break with a 14-0 lead.
Two plays into the second half Westwood‘s Taylor Dellangelo scampered 61 yards to the endzone and got the Pats within 14-6 but thirty seconds later Visintainer connected with tight end Jake Dumais for a 76-yard touchdown strike, igniting 28 unanswered Mountaineer points.
Chad Pohlman raced 53 yards to paydirt with 10:21 left in the fourth quarter and Stephen Kangas scored from 14 yards out with 1:15 to play for his first career varsity touchdown.
Westwood racked up 398 yards compared to Iron Mountain’s 369 but the Patriots were hampered by nine penalties that totaled 75 yards. Westwood drops to 1-1 and welcomes Calumet next Friday.
