It was a happy homecoming at Westwood High School as the Patriots rolled past Manistique 52-19 in West PAC football action on Friday.
Westwood marched 61 yards downfield on their opening possession, capped by a 3-yard touchdown pass from Taylor Dellangelo to Mason Mariuzza with 3:15 left in the opening quarter.
The Patriots struck again with 11:23 to play in the first half when Chad Pohlman turned a screen pass upfield for a 47-yard touchdown, capping a 77-yard scoring drive. Garrett Mann recovered a Manistique fumble on the ensuing kickoff and Mariuzza hauled in a 38-yard touchdown pass on the next play to give Westwood a 22-0 lead.
Manistique quarterback Schyler Anderson ran for a 65-yard touchdown at the 9:37 mark but less than a minute later Erik Anderson capped a 68-yard drive with a touchdown run from ten yards out.
Manistique answered with a one-yard touchdown run from Anderson to get within 30-13 with 4:26 left in the first half. Westwood drove deep into Emerald territory in the final minutes of the half but the drive stalled with an interception.
Westwood scored touchdowns on their first two drives of the second half; a 75-yard pass to Pohlman and a 61-yard run by Anderson to go up 46-13 with 4:22 left in the third quarter. Manistique’s Anderson ripped off a 70-yard touchdown run 20 seconds later and Westwood’s Dylan Bebee found the end zone from 12 yards out with 7:14 left in the fourth quarter to cap the scoring.
Westwood improves to 3-2 while the Emeralds drop to 1-4 overall. The Patriots’ 52 points were the most in a single game since October 16, 2015, also against Manistique. Westwood returns to action next Friday night when they travel to take on Hancock at Finlandia University.
