Westwood never trailed Friday night, moving within one win of securing a third consecutive playoff berth after topping L’Anse 30-6 in West PAC football action.
L’Anse failed to move the ball on their opening drive but a deep punt pinned Westwood at the 20-yard line. The Patriots responded with an 80-yard march to the endzone, capped by a 13-yard rushing touchdown from Taylor Dellangelo. The successful two-point conversion gave Westwood an 8-0 lead with 7:03 to play in the opening quarter.
The Patriot defense forced a turnover on 4th-and-inches on the ensuing Purple Hornet possession and one play later Chad Pohlman raced 52 yards to paydirt. Pohlman found the endzone again with 6:40 to play in the first half, this time from three yards out, capping a 62-yard drive that gave the Pats a 22-0 lead.
L’Anse responded on the ensuing possession as quarterback Alex Kissel connected with Terry Reed for a 19-yard touchdown following a 37-yard passing play that got the Hornets into the Patriot redzone. L’Anse forced a punt and drove to the Westwood 35-yard line in the final minute of the first half but couldn’t score.
L’Anse opened the third quarter with a successful onside kick but were forced to punt. On the ensuing possession, Erik Anderson capped a 62-yard scoring drive with a 10-yard touchdown run.
Westwood improves to 5-2 and have now won four consecutive games while L’Anse suffers their second straight defeat and drops to 4-3 overall. The Patriots return to action on Friday, October 18, with a road contest at Gogebic. The Miners (0-7) were bested by Negaunee 42-16 on Friday.
